How does it work?
Pregnancy tests like this detect Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone that is released by the placenta, which helps the fetus develop. Since the placenta only forms after a woman becomes pregnant, hCG is a reliable marker that indicates pregnancy. Within nine days after a sperm fertilizes an egg in the woman’s fallopian tube, the embryo travels to the uterus, where it implants itself into the uterine wall. After implantation, the embryo grows a placenta, which serves as the conduit between the fetus and the mother’s blood stream. hCG levels rise very rapidly and peak at around 14 weeks after a woman’s last menstrual cycle. hCG is can be detected in a woman’s blood as soon as 6 days after implantation, before she misses her next period.
hCG is released by the placenta into the mother’s bloodstream, but some of it also escapes filtration in the kidneys and enters the urine. Thus, pregnancy urine tests often detect the presence of hCG. ALFA’s instant pregnancy testing kits are 99% accurate and are sensitive enough to detect 25 mIU/mL of hCG.
Though the presence of hCG in the blood is widely regarded as a sign of pregnancy, there are other conditions in which a woman produces hCG. For example, a tumor or abnormal growth inside a woman’s ovaries or uterus may release hCG. In men, tumors in the testicles may also produce hCG.
